Just remember, before 9/11 people scoffed at the idea of hijackers using airplanes as guided missiles too.
A professor of entomology in Wyoming named Jeffrey Lockwood has written a book where he argues that terrorists could use swarms of insects to kill untold numbers of people. Apparently, they could infect the mosquitoes or whatever with some blood-borne pathogen to which the Western world is largely vulnerable and then they could set these insects loose in cities all over the world and let nature take its course. Several diseases are spread through insect bites, so his argument is not without merit.
Check it out for yourself. His book is called Six-Legged Soldiers: Using Insects as Weapons of War and it is available here: http://www.amazon.com/Six-Legged-Soldiers-Using-Insects-Weapons/dp/0195333055/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231179288&sr=8-1
