On the Road Again!

At it again!  I've been home for a whole 8 days, so it's time to wrack up another 1,000 miles or so under my wheels.

Jodi was accepted into the Plymouth State University counseling program and starts in September.  A family commitment in mid-August, however, means that we need to move in the next few weeks (right after she finished teaching summer school in July).  We're like professional movers we've done this so many times and each time we try doing things a little differently.  This time we're not going to ship anything, but we can't fit it all in our little Ford Escort (and a truck is too expensive to rent).  So, a friend of ours has lent us his Ford Escape and I've packed every square inch possible with the majority of our earthly possessions and I'll head out tomorrow morning.  Another friend loaned me his E-Z Pass, which will let me breeze through the 30 or so toll booths between here and Plymouth.

First stop is Vermont to pick up a number of things my mom was keeping for us and then, on Tuesday, it's off to Plymouth and a beautiful storage locker waiting all this junk.  I'll also get a chance to visit a couple of prospective homes where we might live.  Wednesday morning sends me home again.  Total distance:  ~1,300 miles.

Why don't I own a GPS device yet with all these roadtrips???  No idea!

In honor of Jodi getting into Plymouth State and our impending move to New Hampshire, some friends of ours are giving us a going away party this evening.  Canoeing, Kayaking, and grilling await!  I'll post photos later on tonight.

She's In!!

I've been posting regularly about Jodi's applications to Plymouth State University.  A few weeks ago she heard that she was accepted into the Eating Disorders Institute at PSU for their cetificate program.  Well, the good news continues!  Today she heard that she's also been accepted into the Master's program that she wanted!!!!  So, now she can study the exact topic she wants (eating disorders) and come out with a master's that will let her counsel people struggling to overcome them!!  Her dream program and job!!!

YAY JODI!!!!!!!

So, YES, we are DEFINITELY moving to NEW HAMPSHIRE some time in the next two months!  HOORAY!!

A Life Well Lived

Trekker came into our lives a mere 23 months ago, but regardless of its length, his life was rife with stories!

Here is the very first picture taken of him on July 27, 2007. He was only 2 months old and already the same size of our 14-month old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Cobi. Right after this first meeting Trekker turned around and peed all over that cement car stop while Cobi looked on and wondered why we'd needed to get a second dog.

Where Cobi is high-strung, Trekker was always very laid-back and relaxed. Cobi is nervous around strangers and Trekker can't get enough of them. That personality stayed with him throughout his life.

Trekker ate a lot and grew very, VERY quickly! We had to get him a bigger kennel after only 4 weeks. Poor guy was a little cramped in his old one.

When he reached his 10-month birthday, he was already 90 pounds and full of energy. We found that the easiest way to tire him out was a good, long day of hiking on the Appalachian Trail. He was great for the first half of the day and would finally start to lay down halfway through the afternoon. The odd 10 miles was his limit! When he would get tired, he would run ahead and lay down under a bush or on a patch of grass and wait for us to catch up. Then he would wait for us to get out of sight before jumping up, barking, and racing to catch up again. He'd pass us, find a spot to rest and continue in this way for the rest of the day (sometimes 5 miles or more).

When we moved to Virginia, hiking was still on our minds and we soon found the Prince William Forest Park off Route 1 outside Quantico MCB. We tramped those trails beginning last Fall and continuing straight through the Winter and Spring. Trekker didn't care for the Summer heat and humidity, but could put in a full day when it was cooler. Whenever it was too warm (60 degrees or warmer), he would drink absolutely every drop of water he could find. Not such a great idea when the water is from a pool of standing water from a deep truck tire rut in the ground that might be 2 weeks old. "Don't DRINK things!"

Not one to miss a good nap, Trekker quickly found "his" spot in our apartment. It was exactly the same spot that I chose, but that didn't matter. He spent hours looking out the window, just rolling his eyes around to take in his world. Cobi liked to sit with him because, well, then the world took him more seriously too!

The crazy part of where he slept, though, is that, in Dallas, Trekker wouldn't go anywhere near a couch or blanket or bed. He never slept on anything soft (not even a blanket!). He roughs it for a couple of months out in the woods, though, and now he's gotta have his pillow! Every time he hopped up on the couch he would pull the pillow off the back of the couch and put it on the armrest before laying down on it. The couch just wasn't soft enough for him!
Trekker was an adventurer, a napper, always up for a walk, a rawhide, meeting a new dog, and eager to haul my shoes from the closet into the kitchen when he got very excited (no matter where I was at the time). He was quirky and friendly. He was protective and loyal. And, from all the messages we've received in the last two weeks, he touched a lot of lives in his short time on earth. It was an honor to be Trekker's family and to share his life with so many others.

He's Home

For a variety of reasons, Jodi and I decided instead to spread Trekker's ashes in Prince William Forest Park.  The four of us had spent hundreds of hours there over the past year and Trekker was very much at home on those trails.  We set up a small rock cairn at the base of a tree near a stream too, so if you ever find yourself in Northern Virginia and feel like stretching your legs, take a stroll through Prince William Forest Park and enjoy Trekker's second home!

Day 2

Today was my second Cross Fit workout and it AGAIN kicked my butt!  I was so sore this morning from yesterday that I debated skipping the gym, but crawled out of bed and made it in.  Today's thrilling workout was 50 Pull-ups - 100 Tricep Dips done in however much time it took.  I got through them in 18 minutes and can now barely lift my arms.  OORAH!!  I'm not sure if I'll be able to survive a whole week of this!

AWESOME WORKOUT!!!

Today's the Day

I just wanted to let you all know that we're going to spread Trekker's ashes today.  It will be hard, but we're happy to bring him to the Appalachian Trail where he was the happiest.  I'm going to do a sort of memorial post later this afternoon with a couple of photos.
